What to Check Before Buying from a Peptide Vendor

A practical checklist for evaluating a research peptide vendor, covering COA availability, labeling accuracy, storage claims, and listing transparency.

Before buying from a peptide vendor, check four things on the listing itself: whether a certificate of analysis is available for the specific lot being sold, whether the label matches what the COA actually tested, how the vendor describes storage and handling, and whether the listing states research-use-only status clearly rather than burying it in fine print. These four checks are what separate a listing that can be verified from one that just asks to be trusted.

Start with the Certificate of Analysis

A certificate of analysis (COA) is a lab report showing what was actually measured in a given batch — typically purity by HPLC and identity confirmation by mass spectrometry. The question to ask is not “does this vendor have COAs” but “does this vendor have a COA for this lot.” Some listings link to a COA from months earlier, tested on a different production run than what ships today. A lot number on the COA that matches a lot number on the vial label is the detail that makes the document useful rather than decorative.

If a listing has no COA at all, or only offers to send one after purchase, that is a gap worth noting before checking out. A vendor that already publishes COAs alongside the listing is giving a buyer something to check against the product in hand rather than asking for trust upfront.

Read the Label Against the COA

Once a COA exists, the next check is whether the numbers on it match what the label claims. A vial labeled 5 mg should have a COA showing purity and mass consistent with that figure, not a report for a differently sized batch. Mismatches are usually simple mislabeling rather than fraud, but a buyer has no way to tell the difference from outside, so the check matters regardless of cause.

Some listings also state a peptide’s molecular weight or sequence. These are checkable facts, not marketing claims — the same peptide sold by different vendors should carry the same molecular weight because it is a property of the molecule, not of the seller. A listing that gets this wrong, or omits it entirely, is easier to overlook than a missing COA but still worth a second look.

Compare What “Research Use Only” Actually Means on the Listing

Every research peptide listing should carry research-use-only (RUO) labeling, but the phrase appears in different places with different weight. Some vendors put it once in small print at the bottom of a product page. Others repeat it in the title, the description, and the shipping terms. The placement itself is a signal: a vendor treating RUO as a real operating constraint tends to state it consistently, while a vendor treating it as a legal formality tends to bury it.

Check How Storage and Shipping Are Described

Lyophilized peptides and reconstituted (liquid) peptides have different storage needs, and a listing should say which state the product ships in. Lyophilized powder is generally more stable at room temperature for short periods than a reconstituted solution, which typically needs refrigeration. A listing that describes cold-chain shipping for a lyophilized product, or says nothing about shipping conditions at all, has left out information a buyer needs to judge whether the product was handled appropriately in transit.

This is also where pricing math sometimes appears. If a listing states a price per milligram, that figure should be calculable directly from the vial size and price shown — a 10 mg vial priced at $80 works out to $8 per mg, and that number should match any per-mg claim printed elsewhere on the same listing. When it does not, the discrepancy is a listing error worth flagging rather than a reason to assume dishonesty, but it still means the numbers were not checked before publishing.

Look at Catalogue Consistency, Not Just One Listing

A single well-documented listing says something about that one product. Looking across a vendor’s catalogue says more about whether documentation is a habit or an exception. A catalogue where COA availability, lot tracking, and RUO labeling are consistent across dozens of listings reflects a documentation process, not a one-off effort on a flagship product. Buyers evaluating a new vendor can compare a handful of listings side by side across a catalogue, the way one would when browsing a COA-verified source, to see whether labeling practices hold steady rather than varying listing to listing.

Consistency also shows up in smaller details: whether units are written the same way throughout (mg vs. mcg, not switched mid-listing), whether reconstitution instructions use consistent volumes, and whether product photos actually match the vial size and form described in text.

What to Check Before Buying: A Short Summary

Checking a peptide vendor before buying comes down to matching claims against evidence: a COA for the specific lot, a label that agrees with that COA, molecular weight and identity details that are independently checkable, clear and consistently placed research-use-only labeling, and storage or shipping descriptions that fit the product’s actual state. None of these checks require chemistry expertise — they require reading the listing carefully and asking whether each claim has something behind it. A vendor that makes those checks easy to perform is telling a buyer something useful before any purchase is made.
